St Michel and Dylan Mouth – both out of the 2017 Melbourne Cup

Bad news for the Sir Mark Prescott trained St Michel, who was found to be lame before entering quarantine. The European galloper was one of the better international hopes, having finished second in the Belmont Gold Cup in June behind another contender, Red Cardinal.

St Michel then all-but booked his ticket with a good third in the Lonsdale Cup at York last month, before this issue.

Prescott said on Friday: “Unfortunately St Michel was slightly lame yesterday and he’s not sound this morning so he won’t be able to enter quarantine to go to Australia. It’s a great shame for the owners as he looked to have a nice weight in the Melbourne Cup.”

Dylan Mouth was also ruled out after he ran a poor seventh in the Group 3 Legacy Cup at Newbury. He needed to run top three for trainer Marco Botti to consider him going well enough for a trip to Australia. Those plans have now been aborted.
